1st Panel: The Problem of “Good” in the History of Philosophy.
We will accept contributions that focus how the meaning of “the good” has changed over the course of the history of philosophy, especially those which shed light on the way the these changes may have influenced or been influenced by changing notions of what it means to be human.
2nd Panel: The Good and Rights.
We will accept contributions that focus on the relationship between what is good and the law. In this panel we will discuss the connection between ethics and rights, including whether and how is possible to define an ethical universal.
3rd Panel: The Good in Cultures and Traditions.
We will accept contributions that highlight how – extending beyond mere philosophical influences – the concept of the good may differ in various historical and cultural contexts, and the ways in which a notion of the good may become the heir, and thus the bearer, of a particular tradition, be it cultural, religious, or otherwise.
4th Panel: Good and God.
We accept contributions that focus on the relationship between philosophical notions of the good on the one hand and belief on the other. The panel will discuss the connection between subjective and objective goods, both as approached privately and as learnt at various levels of society. The relationship between good and religion will also be considered.
